Artistic Direction Curation Consultancy
In addition to her artistic direction and curatorship, Meriem Berrada is an independent consultant to agencies focused on cultural engineering and strategy.
Creation
Meriem Berrada is widely recognised for her ability to develop and produce innovative cultural projects, having successfully launched initiatives such as La Chambre Claire (2013), a juried art contest to support emerging African photography, and Passerelles (2014), a series of workshops designed to raise awareness of contemporary art in semi-urban areas. In 2016, she played a key role in the creation of the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (MACAAL) in Marrakech, where she has served as artistic director since 2018.
Transmission
As part of her ongoing support for cultural ecosystems in Africa, Berrada established MACAAL Bootcamp, a programme that hones professional, leadership, and personal development skills for young cultural practitioners from the continent. She regularly acts as a mentor for projects such as NOOR Photo (Netherlands) and Duvangu (Gabon), and has been a jury member for initiatives including the British Journal of Photography, the CNAP / Ateliers Médicis commission, and the Goethe Institute (South Africa).
Meriem Berrada is a frequent contributor to high-level conferences, such as Harvard University's symposium on curatorial practice in Africa (2022) and the Museums of Tomorrow Roundtable, held in San Francisco in 2023.
Support
Her curatorial approach explores the intersections of art and craft within contemporary narratives. She raises awareness about traditional skills and artisan practitioners by establishing their visibility at the heart of the museum, and continues to support artists in the development and production of their works. Recent exhibitions include: the Pavilion of the Kingdom of Morocco at the 61st Venice Biennale (2026), Display by Sara Ouhaddou (2025), Fieldworks by Amina Agueznay (2024), Our Land Just Like A Dream by Joël Andrianomearisoa (2022), as well as the first solo exhibition by Daoud Aoulad Syad in the Arab world: Territories of the Instant at Mathaf Doha (2025).
